Results: Trafford Young Composer And Poet Of The Year
FOR the first time in the prize’s 18 year history, a poet and musician jointly won the coveted shield which usually goes to the overall winner.
Thanks to their equally high marks, 15-year-old Kerry Tamblyn and 18-year-old Jacob Ross saw their compositions – of a poem and a musical composition, respectively, earning high recognition.
A competition with a strong history, it has seen children travelling from all over the country, including a seven-year-old who travelled from London to hear her poem professionally performed. Not only do the winners get to celebrate, but all finalists have the chance to hear their poems and compositions performed by actors.
Chairman of the judges, Alan Watson, acknowledges the importance of the “big thrill” the young people get from hearing their works, and notes how it “encourages them to take [their talent] further.” As several competitors have gone on to study English or music at university, clearly this is the case.
Jacob, however, prefers to compose as a hobby, having decided to study French and Chinese at SheffieldUniversity in the autumn. Kerry is also a linguist, hoping to study Spanish and German later on.
The winners of each group were:
Music – Under 12s – Ben Moore, aged 10 from Altrincham C of E Primary School for “Running in the Meadow”
Poetry – Under 12s – Andrew Sheppard aged 10 from Moorlands Junior School, Sale for “The sound of Demons”
Music – 12 – 18 – Jacob Ross, aged 18 from UrmstonGrammar School for “Melodie du Violon”
Poetry – 12 – 18 – Kerry Tamblyn aged 15 from Altrincham Girls Grammar School for “Federico Garcia Lorca”
