MUCH to thousands of Stone Roses' fans dismay, the seminal band's enigmatic guitarist John Squire has turned his back on music for good it seems, putting pay to any lingering hopes of a dramatic reunion.

Instead Squire is now ploughing all his energies into his other lifelong passion - art.

And after a couple of exhibitions in the capital in 2007, Squire has scheduled a handful of others for the next 18 months, including one in Oldham.

Based in the countryside just outside Macclesfield, Squire's notable brushwork talents first came to the public's attention thanks to his Jackson Pollack-inspired single and album covers for the band in the late 1980s.

This continued for the band's dark and long-overdue (and underrated) sophomore LP, Second Coming, and into his work with the Seahorses and his solo offerings too.

Raft

After exhibiting his work to date at the Great Northern back in 2004, Squire set about producing a whole raft of new work which finally went on show last year in two galleries in the capital.

Squire's current direction promises to reveal an intricate, serene abstract landscape, intersected with slithers of found garments displaying traditional tweeds, patterns and residues of the owner's wear and tear.

According to his official website, this collection entitled 'Re-Engineered Garments', "re-appropriates used clothing to reduce our focus onto the intricacies of the weave and texture of the cloth which Squire integrates into the textural surface of the painting."

Said to be Squire's most prolific work to date - alas for fans of his dexterous guitar playing, he appears to have found real contentment in his countryside studio.

John Squire's Major Solo Work is at Gallery Oldham from Wednesday, July 9, 2009 until Friday, September 5, 2009. Click here for more information.
