Passion Pit

HAS music ever boasted so romantic a tale as the raison d’etre for Passion Pit? We would wager not, because the Massachusettes band began life as a Valentine’s Day gift for lead man Michael Angelakos’ girlfriend. All together now… ahhhhh!

Truth is that the then-21 year old’s fit of musical inspiration did not come from nowhere.

Described by those around him as ‘the real deal’ whose interest in music started when we was a ‘piano-pounding five year old’, Angelakos should have made a name for himself as a musician a lot earlier than he did.

Electro madness

But there’s a flipside to that, too. Because when he finally got round to recording some songs, he was so tired of traditional musical tools that he hunted around for unconventional approaches and sounds, many of which he found on the hard drive of his computer.

The result is an electro madness as mad as a bag of bees and as E-nlightening as all-night session on the 10p mixes.

And while the band’s debut records, the Chunk Of Change EP and album Manners, are a one-man show with Angelakos playing all the instruments and loopily looping all the samples and plug-ins, live the band are quite a different proposition with four bandmates with equally interesting surnames (Al Adhamy, Apruzzese, Donmoyer and Hultquist) and comparable talents bolstering the sound.
